“To see where the DJ is at now is remarkable,” DJ Kid Capri said at the event. “For so many years the DJ had the door shut in their face, so this is a celebration of sorts.”

From being the pulse of the party to helping dictate the direction of popular music, some of the business’s most respected and recognized DJs, music executives and historians are featured in the film, including Kid Capri, Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Jazzy Joyce, The World Famous Brucie B, DJ SNS and DJ Irie.

Conversations surrounding DJ culture, within Hip-Hop and the multifaceted music industry, are ones that can continue for days on end. Pridgen pieced together the documentary exceptionally, with many diverse topics being explored within the 90-minute film.

“Music helps you do a lot of things,” says Jazzy Joyce. “When you listen to a certain song, you remember certain things. The first song we all learn is the ABC’s, so you tell me how important music is.”

DJing as part of Music GCSE

"Exam board AQA has announced a series of changes to its GCSE Music syllabus, which includes to addition of DJing as a solo performance option.

Candidates have always had to demonstrate a performance skill to get their Music GCSE, but if exam regulator Ofqual approves AQA’s changes, students will be able to gain credit by scratching and showing how they’d prepare for a gig among other DJ skills.

“They originally said that jazz wasn’t real music, and they said it about rock and pop too,” AQA music head Seb Ross told BBC Newsbeat. “Dance music – like any kind of music – is about performing with skill and understanding how music creates mood and meaning.”

"I had a ridiculous record collection. And I wanted to prove that it was the records that inspired me. Because ... I understand scales and musical arrangements and that stuff but I didn't have — I was not a player. I'm not going to pick up a bass or a guitar or keys and I'm going to, you know, put some virtuoso stuff down. That's not going to happen. But what I do have is a turntable and records. And so I just want to create this collage, almost like a Romare Bearden kind of a painting."
